Power players in the Rulership and Succession in the Ottoman Sultanate

Acquiring and keeping the throne in the Ottoman Empire was no easy task. Most sultans took the view that the best method of securing power was to kill all other claimants. Judicial royal fratricide became an accepted method of securing the Ottoman throne until the practice was abolished in the 17th century. This talk will delve into the details of this devilish device.

Calling all cellists! Join us for an amazing workshop with top cellist, Angela East.
Born into a musical family, Angela started cello lessons at the age of four. She is widely respected as one of the most brilliant and dynamic performers of baroque cello. In 1997, Angela became a member of baroque group, Red Priest, performing in over 1,000 concerts worldwide.
Angela has a long history of teaching and is currently the director of the London Cello Club. We are delighted that she is coming to Queen’s to lead this open workshop.

This amazing, multimedia art course will fuse textiles and fine art to create the largest, outdoor art installation at Queen’s College! Under the direction of outstanding artist and teacher Laura Burgoyne, students will sew, print and paint a 1.2m by 15m panel which will form the stunning backdrop to our wonderful new wildlife garden.

New for 2020 is this highly-creative, hands-on course combining design, technology and timber engineering. The week will start with you drawing up and developing your own design for a stunning bird table or bat box. You will then learn the essential skills, knowledge and practices of working with timber as you transform your ideas into reality by building your design. Alongside this you will learn about the environmental issues that designers and engineers are currently facing and you will get to visit a local saw mill to see how trees are transformed into the planks we will eventually be using.
